Fall fun at pumpkin patches
I love fall!
After the hot and humid summer, I enjoy the crisp autumn air, spectacular cloud formations, fall foliage, and the first cozy fires of the season.
With winter lurking right around the corner, there’s all the more reason to live it up one more time before we go into hibernation mode.
One of our favorite ways to create seasonal memories is to visit a pumpkin patch.
Don’t you just love those perfectly plump, shiny orange orbs, or gourds in all shades from white to stripey, smooth or with glorious warts?!
In the Finger Lakes, we’re lucky to have lots of choices for pumpkin picking!
You’ll find everything from tiny pumpkin fields where you leave your money in a jar at a roadside stand to giant pumpkin patch and corn maze operations with loads of entertainment options to go with your gourds.
So you decide what’s the best pumpkin patch for your needs: Pick your own pumpkin and go?
Or are you in the mood for an outing that involves tractor rides, apple cannons, pumpkin trebuchets, bounce houses, or even a Halloween pumpkin patch?
Not to mention – apple cider and nibbling on freshly fried donuts.
To help you decide where to take your family fall outing, I’ve rounded up as many listings as I could find across the Finger Lakes. Find them below.
Oh, and for some general pumpkin tips, I went straight to the experts:
How to choose and take care of your pumpkin
I spoke to Amy, George, and Andrew at Blue Barn Acres, LLC in Victor for some advice on how to pick the best pumpkin from the field and make it last once you take it home.
Here’s what they told me:
How to choose the perfect pumpkin at the patch
- Look for a pumpkin with a well attached stem, no dings or cuts.
How to wash and store your pumpkin
- Use a white vinegar and water solution (1 cup vinegar to 2 gallons of water) in a sink or outdoor tub and let the pumpkins float for 15 minutes. (They prefer this to bleach.)
- Use a soft cloth to wash if needed. Don’t scrub with a brush or abrasive sponge as it can damage the skin of the pumpkin.
- Keep the pumpkin out of direct sunlight and dry and cool for extended storage.
Carving your pumpkin
- For pumpkin carving, they have used petroleum jelly on the inside and any cut surface. It’s a bit messy, they say, but it does slow down the shriveling process.
Finger Lakes Pumpkin Patches
Here are your local pumpkin patches, organized by county.
Most of them have U-pick pumpkins, while some focus more on the entertainment and also sell a variety of pre-picked pumpkins.
I’m sure I’ve missed some, so please email me or add them in the comments. Thank you!
